WHPacific Adopts-A-Road in Snohomish County, WA
On December 12, 2009, volunteers from WHPacific’s Bothell, WA office gathered at the Ash Way and 18th Avenue West Roundabout in the area of Lynnwood for our inaugural WHPacific Adopt-a-Road event!

Fortunately, the weather cooperated with clear, cold conditions.  After a fresh, hot cup of joe and a bite of warm gingerbread, the hardy volunteers set up traffic control at the roundabout, scoured the roadway corridor for trash, and raked leaves from the landscaped areas.  The total take was about 10 bags of leaves and 12 bags of trash.  All of the volunteers enjoyed their time on this project and the road has never looked better.

The Bothell office chose this project to support the community and provide a necessary service to Snohomish County. During 2006 and 2007, WHPacific provided surveying, base mapping, traffic analysis, and engineering services to prepare preliminary and final design PS&E documents for this three-legged, single lane roundabout. The project was awarded the 2009 ACEC Washington Bronze in Exceeding Owner/Client Needs.

Civil Engineering Magazine Features WHPacific Project

The December 2008 edition of Civil Engineering Magazine ran a feature article on one of WHPacific's signature projects, the American River Diversion near Auburn, California.  WHPacific began working on this project in 2004, when the US Bureau of Reclamation hired us to create a permanent water supply for Placer County.  The County's main water supply had been diverted during construction of Auburn Dam; that construction was halted by an earthquake in 1975.  Temporary pumping facilities put in place during construction were not adequate to meet the County's water demands two decades later, while reconstruction of the dam was stalled by environmental and funding battles.  

To solve this problem, WHPacific designed an innovative, multi-use water supply facility and restored a 4,000-ft long reach of the American River that had been dewatered for construction.  Our efforts created a permanent water supply for Placer County that was not reliant on the dam.  A massive river stabilization and restoration effort was required, which incorporated river recreation and fish passage opportunities.  The diversion weir was a very low slope dam that incorporates whitewater rapids that can be run by canoes and kayaks.  It also serves as a fish passage since its rock construction mimics a natural river bottom.

WHPacific Featured in Sustainable Land Development Today

One of WHPacific's land development projects was prominently featured in the June issue of Sustainable Land Development Today  magazine.  The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District/Portland Community College Rock Creek Recreation Facility was the source of an article titled "Win-Win For College and Community."  This award-winning project, managed by Mark Hadley in the Portland office, represents a unique and very successful collaboration between a park district with funding but no land and a community college with land but no funding.  Both needed to expand their sports and recreation facilities, which was accomplished when the college leased 32 acres of land to the park district at a greatly reduced rate.  Together, they developed the property into a shared recreation complex that features a number of sustainable elements, including pervious pavement, landscape infiltration, and bioswales.

WHPacific, Inc. Acquires Innovative Surveying Technology

Anchorage, Alaska, April 11, 2008 - WHPacific, Inc. is proud to announce that it has recently added the LYNX Mobile Mapper to its inventory of innovative surveying technology.  WHPacific is the first company in the United States to take delivery of this new equipment, advancing the state-of-the-practice in surveying technology.  The LYNX system is the next step in terrestrial mapping and surveying, incorporating three proven technologies, lidar, GPS and the Applanix POS LV system (Inertial Measurement Unit) into a field unit to produce survey grade 3D data from a mobile vehicular platform.

Patrick Beehler Elected President of NSPS

Mission in highest post is to further common interests, objectives and political effort that binds the surveying profession in the United States

Olympia, WA (March 6, 2008) –At the joint annual conference of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), American Congress on Surveying & Mapping (ACSM), and Land Surveyors Association of Washington (LSAW) in Spokane, Washington, locally-based Patrick J. Beehler, PLS, begins his term in office as NSPS President. Beehler is the Director of Surveying for WHPacific’s Olympia office, where he oversees a staff of licensed surveyors and technicians.

“We’re extremely proud of Pat,” remarked Jon Warren, PLS, WHPacific’s national surveying business line manager. “He has devoted his career to the advancement of the surveying profession, and it is a commitment he demonstrates every day in his role at our firm by providing exceptional service to our clients and staff. I’m confident his involvement will lead to great things for NSPS and WHPacific.”

Beehler has over 40 years of experience, and has served on various boards, committees, and councils of NSPS, ACSM, and LSAW. His awards include NSPS Surveying Excellence (2006), NSPS Key Governor Award (2002), and LSAW Surveyor of the Year (1994). He is also an active member of the Tumwater Rotary Club and Thurston County Chamber of Commerce.

Upon the expiration of his presidential term in March 2009, Beehler will transfer into the Immediate Past President Position from March 2009 to April 2010.

Gordon Smith Appointed to Civil Engineering Advisory Board

Gordon Smith, Director of Transportation in the WHPacific Boise office, was appointed to the University of Idaho 's Civil Engineering Advisory Board. The Board serves as a liaison between the University 's Civil Engineering Department and the external civil engineering industry. Gordon is serving a three-year term, ending in August of 2010, during which time he will advise the Civil Engineering Department on strategic matters such as curriculum planning and facilities, industry trends, and student recruitment.

Karcher Interchange Wins 1st Place in Engineering Excellence Awards

ACEC of Idaho announced the winners of 2007 Engineering Excellence Awards, selecting WHPacific 's design of the new Karcher Interchange in Nampa, Idaho for 1st Place in the Structural Systems category. Along with other award winners, the Karcher Interchange project will be profiled at the ISPE Annual Banquet in Boise in June 2008. The project is also eligible to proceed to the ACEC national competition.

WHPacific Takes Part in Extreme Makeover for ABC TV

On the morning of July 11, the lives of the Stockdale family in Middleton, Idaho were forever changed when they received Ty Pennington 's famous "Good Morning" wake-up call. Their home was selected for demolition and rebuilding by the producers of ABC 's popular TV show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

W&H Pacific (an ASCG company) was proud to be on the project 's design team, providing surveying and landscape architectural services. Boise-based employees Aaron Rush, Travis Foster, Steve Groven, Javier Amaya, and Rodney Evans were tasked with meeting the project 's extremely compressed schedule. Several more Boise staff volunteered their time to carry wood, hand out water, and provide general labor during the build.

Wednesday, July 18 was "Move That Bus" day, when the new home was revealed to the family.

ASCG Wins Comanche Nation Casino Project

Comanche Nation Selects ASCG and Flintco for Casino/Hotel

ASCG Incorporated of New Mexico and the Oklahoma-based construction company, Flintco, Inc. have been selected by the Comanche Nation to provide design and construction for a casino/hotel complex near Lawton, OK.

Comanche tribal enrollment now numbers 13,391 with approximately 6,000 members residing in the Lawton-Ft. Sill area of southwest Oklahoma. The Comanche Nation complex is located nine miles north of Lawton.

The facility is slated to open in Fall 2009 and is located south of Lawton on the Texas border. The Red River forms the southern edge of the property and is also the Oklahoma state line. Access will be from Interstate 44 (Exit 1). Total project costs are $97 million.

The casino will feature 1,100 slots, 15 table games, a poker room, steakhouse, buffet, 24-hour restaurant/deli and retail shops. The 151-room hotel will have indoor/outdoor pools, spa, health club, and direct access to the golf club house and conference center. The hotel will be designed to allow for future expansion of 100 to 150 rooms. Other project consultants include:

NB3 Consulting - Founded by four-time PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III. His firm will design the golf course. NB3 Consulting has created golf properties for a number of Native American Tribes, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, and Oneida Indian Nation.
Red Thunder Studio - A Native American-owned interior design located in Atlanta, GA. The firm specializes in hospitality design and has worked with over 15 Tribes.

Horizon Engineering - The Tulsa-based Indian owned civil engineering firm will tackle various engineering design, surveying, and construction tasks and has worked with numerous Tribes and Nations throughout the United States.

The unique quality of the primary firms that make up the design team is that they are all American-Indian owned companies. Structural engineering services will be provided by the firm of Chavez-Grieves, Albuquerque, NM.

"ASCG Incorporated will also create a master plan of the property that will include the golf course, future RV park, casitas/condos along the golf course, and a wastewater treatment facility," said Tom Cassidy, AIA, Associate Vice President, Hospitality Services for ASCG. "Other amenities may be added later."

Cassidy said one of the biggest challenges will be to bring the required utilities to the site, such as gas, electric and water.

"None of these services are located near the site. We also anticipate major road improvements to the site from I-44 as well as improvements to the intersection of I-44 and State Route 36," he said.
