Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) requested that their structure not look like a standard "urban parking structure," yet respect surroundings and provide PNM with a signature structure in downtown Albuquerque. Rather than a standard "static" design, the design team chose to express motion in the exterior fenestration by using aluminum panels in a wave design. This element is carried into the glass towers by the introduction of ceramic chips in the glass to express a wave.
While eye-catching in its use of materials and shape (fiber optics follow the curves at night), the new PNM parking structure creates an exciting relief to its surrounding downtown structures. Major components include 8 parking levels, pre-engineered structural steel canopy system for shade, aluminum panel system with tinted glaze, post-tensioned concreted structural system, aircraft cable used for railing, and a patterned wave design of the aluminum panels for a more transparent image.
