The Sunset Pond project represents an evolution in flood control facility design for Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority (SSCAFCA), and proved to be an effective and prudent investment of public funds.
- The Art of Flood Control: Unique, hand-placed stones are a functional part of the drainage system, adding visual impact without increasing the cost. This innovative approach to flood control design helped initiate partnerships between SSCAFCA and local artists on future projects.
- Naturalistic Features: Gentle and varying side slopes, a meandering trail system, riprap side swales, and the storm water quality outfall help soften the look of the facility. The outfall structure also removes trash and improves storm water quality.
- Multi-Use Features: Pedestrian and Bicycle Trails, Native habitat restoration, Open space preservation, and sites for future recreation facilities all enhance the community’s quality of life.
- Education: Signs placed at the Educational Plaza and around pedestrian access points promote environmental stewardship and inform the public about how storm water is managed in their area.
- Flood Protection: The pond provides flood protection for the 100-year storm event, reducing downstream runoff by 92%.
