WHPacific assisted the City of Bothell with trail and bridge design services for important new connections between two regional King County trail systems, the Burke-Gilman Trail and the Sammamish River Trail. The new pedestrian and biking system also provided a critical connection to downtown Bothell by widening the existing 102nd Avenue NE bridge that spans SR 522 and the Sammamish River. The reinforced concrete bridge was widened to provide for an eight-foot-wide sidewalk for pedestrians and bicyclists. The widening was accomplished by installing a lightweight fiberglass panel walking surface on top of the existing concrete sidewalk and cantilevered over the outside edge of the bridge. This design saved the City thousands of dollars over conventional bridge retrofit systems.
